Appropriate Tools – Microsoft SAM

Microsoft Suite of Software Access Management Tools

The need for a tool to execute in order to meet your organizational goal is a very critical guideline. Here are some details of a tool I believe is appropriate.

Software Access Management (SAM) is a concept that implements IT Policy as it relates to Software in an organization. This may include but is not limited the following:

  • What Software us approved for use on company hardware/network.
  • What Software the Company Owns (for inventory purposes).
  • Who can use Software approved.
  • Upgrading Software.

Being that IT Policy lays out the rules of how an organization will operate (from the perspective of IT), it is critical that an organization has a method to enforce and implement the policies they have defined.

Being that different organizations have different needs I have group together a suite of tools created by Microsoft for the purpose of SAM. The tools that Microsoft provides are as follows:

  • Microsoft Enterprise Mobility Suite (EMS)
    • Keeps employees productive on their favorite devices—and your company data protected. [1]
  • Microsoft Intune
    • Provides employees access to corporate resources from virtually anywhere on almost any device. [1]
  • Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Toolkit
    • Makes it easy to inventory and assess your IT infrastructure and determine the right technologies. [1]
  • System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM)
    • Enables employees to work anywhere on the devices that they choose. [5]

While actual technology companies may be tasked with a buy vs build decision when it comes to SAM, for non-technology companies Microsoft (one of the world’s leading technology companies) provides a suite of tools that can pretty much cover the needs for most organizations.
