While Certifications may show that you know how to perform your role, I find there is great value in continued learning and research. Technology is ever changing and I believe one of the most important guidelines is research, as it will allow one to see where the industry is going, and identify where their organization or they themselves as a IT Professional need to move towards.
Below are some resources that I believe may be of value in accomplishing research:

This is a unique book that gives insight to leadership of companies looking to “get with the times” when it comes to their technology practices. Great insight that can be used to help steer or at least provide new perspective to strategic decisions. - Thinkcast – The Gartner Podcast Channel
Gartner is a world renowned organization known for its analysis on best practices in the IT industry. Their podcast contain various topics & industry guests, which can assist IT Professionals think of new ways to approach things regardless of their role in an organization.
